To unscrew one threaded component of the drill string from another downhole. This is an intentional unthreading procedure, performed when part of the string is stuck and must be recovered. A small explosive charge is detonated at a selected tool joint, and the resulting shock, combined with applied torque, causes the connection to unscrew.
