Safety joint

A threaded connection built into a work string to release on command, so the pipe above it can be recovered if the tools below become stuck. It uses coarse threads or a locking feature that lets it unscrew before other connections in the string when the string is turned to the left. It is run in fishing, washover, and drillstem test strings directly above the tool most likely to stick, such as a washover shoe or packer.
