Shoe joint

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003376

A section of casing, usually one or two joints long, between the float collar and the casing shoe at the bottom of a string. When the top cementing plug lands on the float collar, the cement still inside this section is left in the pipe instead of pumped around the shoe, keeping the contaminated tail of the slurry out of the annulus. The bit drills out this shoe track cement and the shoe when the next hole section is started.
