Shoe

A rounded, tapered fitting threaded onto the bottom of a casing string that guides the pipe past ledges and washouts as it is run into the hole. A plain guide shoe is open, whereas a float shoe also holds a check valve that stops cement slurry and wellbore fluid flowing back into the casing. A float collar, a separate valve fitting, is placed one or two joints above the shoe.
