Sulfide stress cracking
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003687
A form of hydrogen embrittlement that occurs in susceptible metals when exposed to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the presence of tensile stress. This can lead to sudden and catastrophic failure of drilling and production equipment, such as drill pipe and casing. NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 provides material selection guidelines to mitigate this risk.
