Stress corrosion cracking

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003648

The brittle fracture of a normally ductile material when subjected to tensile stress in a corrosive environment. In oil and gas operations, this can affect drilling tubulars, well casings, and production equipment exposed to corrosive drilling fluids or produced fluids containing hydrogen sulfide or carbon dioxide. The cracking often initiates at small surface imperfections and propagates without warning.
