Cracking
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000879
A refining process that breaks down large, complex hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, lighter molecules through the application of heat and pressure, often with catalysts. In heavy oil upgrading, cracking reduces the viscosity and increases the API gravity of the crude, making it more marketable and easier to transport. Thermal cracking and catalytic cracking are two primary methods employed.
