Diluent

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001090

A lighter hydrocarbon liquid, such as naphtha or condensate, added to heavy crude oil or bitumen to reduce its viscosity and density. This blending makes the heavy oil transportable through pipelines and easier to process in refineries. The amount of diluent required depends on the original viscosity of the heavy oil and the desired pipeline specification.
