Heavy oil
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001803
Crude oil with high density and viscosity that does not flow easily under normal reservoir conditions. Its resistance to flow is due to a high concentration of asphaltenes and resins, making production difficult without thermal methods or dilution. The American Petroleum Institute (API) gravity for heavy oil is generally below 22.3 degrees, while extra heavy oil is below 10 degrees.
