Heavy metal
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001802
A metallic element with a high atomic weight and density, such as lead, mercury, cadmium, or zinc, that can be present in drilling fluids as a contaminant. These metals originate from mineral ores in drilled formations, pipe dope, or certain fluid additives. Regulations like the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's NPDES permit limit the concentration of specific heavy metals in drilling discharges to the environment.
