Flare gas

Natural gas combusted in an open flame at a production facility, processing plant, or refinery. Flaring is a safety measure to dispose of gas during process upsets, shutdowns, or testing, and is also used for waste gas that is not economical to capture and sell. Regulations such as the US Environmental Protection Agency's New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) OOOOa govern the practice to limit emissions.
