Flare

A combustion device used to burn off excess or waste gases that cannot be economically recovered or safely vented to the atmosphere. Flaring is a safety measure to relieve pressure during upsets or to dispose of associated gas during production testing. It converts hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water vapor.
