Flare

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-011188

1. A device that burns gaseous materials to prevent them from being released into the environment. Flares may operate continuously or intermittently and are usually found on top of a stack. Flares also burn off methane gas in a landfill.

2. A control device that burns hazardous materials to prevent their release into the environment; may operate continuously or intermittently, usually on top of a stack.

3. Combustion device that uses an uncontrolled volume of air to burn gases. The flare includes the foundation, flare tip, structural support, burner, igniter, flare controls, including air injection or steam injection systems, flame arrestors and the flare gas header system. In the case of an interconnected flare gas header system, the flare includes each individual flare serviced by the interconnected flare gas header system and the interconnected flare gas header system.

4. Thermal oxidation system using an open (without enclosure) flame. [40 CFR 60.501] [40 CFR 63.11100 (CFR 2013)]

5. Combustion device lacking an enclosed combustion chamber that uses an uncontrolled volume of ambient air to burn gases. For the purposes of this rule, the definition of flare includes, but is not necessarily limited to, air-assisted flares, steam-assisted flares and non-assisted flares. [40 CFR 63.641 (CFR 2016)]

6. Open combustor without enclosure or shroud.

7. Thermal oxidation system using an open (without enclosure) flame. Completion combustion devices as defined in this section are not considered flares. [40 CFR 60.5430c (CFR 2024)]
