Heavy metal
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005153
A metallic element with a relatively high density, atomic weight, or atomic number, which can be toxic even at low concentrations. These elements are naturally occurring but can become environmental pollutants through human activities such as mining and industrial discharge. Examples include lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic, which accumulate in biological systems.
