Chelation therapy

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001929

A medical procedure for treating metal poisoning by introducing specific chemical compounds, known as chelating agents, into the body. These agents form strong, stable coordinate bonds with toxic metal ions, creating complexes that are less toxic and can be readily excreted through the kidneys. Agents such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) are administered to remove metals like lead, mercury, or arsenic from tissues.
