Cheletropic reaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001930

A pericyclic reaction, a form of cycloaddition or its reverse, in which two new sigma bonds form to a single atom of one reactant, or two sigma bonds to one atom break, while the other component reacts through the terminal atoms of a conjugated system. The coordination number of that single atom changes by two. Sulfur dioxide adds to butadiene in this way to give 3-sulfolene, 2,5-dihydrothiophene 1,1-dioxide.
