σ, π
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010466
Symbols representing types of covalent bonds formed by the overlap of atomic orbitals. A sigma (σ) bond results from the direct, head-on overlap of atomic orbitals, forming a single bond with electron density concentrated along the internuclear axis. A pi (π) bond results from the sideways overlap of p orbitals, forming a bond with electron density above and below the internuclear axis, and is always found in conjunction with a sigma bond in double or triple bonds.
