Overlap integral
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008380
A mathematical integral that quantifies the extent to which two atomic or molecular orbitals occupy the same region of space. It is a measure of the spatial overlap between two wave functions. A non-zero overlap integral is a prerequisite for the formation of a chemical bond between two atoms.
