Overpotential

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008381

The difference between the actual potential at which an electrochemical reaction occurs and the reversible (equilibrium) potential for that reaction, under conditions where a net current is flowing. It represents the extra driving force required to overcome kinetic barriers and achieve a desired reaction rate. Overpotential can be categorized as activation, concentration, or ohmic overpotential.
