Electrocatalysis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003652

The acceleration of an electrochemical reaction rate at an electrode surface due to the presence of a specific substance, the electrocatalyst, which is not consumed in the overall reaction. The electrocatalyst modifies the reaction pathway, lowering the activation energy and overpotential required for the charge transfer process. This phenomenon is distinct from redox mediation, where a mediator shuttles electrons between the electrode and the substrate in solution.
