Overtone transition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008382
A vibrational transition in a molecule where the change in vibrational quantum number is greater than one, corresponding to an excitation to a higher vibrational energy level beyond the fundamental transition. These transitions are typically weaker than fundamental transitions and occur at approximately integer multiples of the fundamental frequency. They are observed in infrared and Raman spectroscopy.
