Spectral overlap

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011131

The extent to which the emission spectrum of a light-emitting chemical entity (the donor) overlaps with the absorption spectrum of another chemical entity (the acceptor). This overlap is a necessary condition for resonance energy transfer between the donor and acceptor pair. The degree of overlap is quantified by the spectral overlap integral, J(λ), which is a key parameter in the calculation of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency.
