Hyperconjugation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005510

The stabilizing interaction that arises from the delocalization of electrons from a filled sigma (σ) bond orbital into an adjacent empty or partially filled non-bonding or antibonding orbital. This effect involves the overlap of a sigma orbital with a pi (π) or p orbital. It contributes to the stability of carbocations, free radicals, and alkenes.
