Carbenium ion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001624
A carbocation in which the positively charged carbon atom is trivalent, meaning it is bonded to three other atoms. This carbon atom possesses an empty p-orbital and is sp2 hybridized. Carbenium ions are electrophilic intermediates in many organic reactions, such as SN1 reactions and electrophilic aromatic substitutions.
