Carbonium ion

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001650

A carbocation in which the positively charged carbon atom is pentacoordinate, meaning it forms five bonds. This type of carbocation is characterized by a three-center, two-electron bond. The term 'carbonium ion' is now largely superseded by 'carbocation' for trivalent species, with 'carbonium ion' specifically referring to pentacoordinate species like the methanium ion (CH5+).
