Benzyl ion

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001193

A carbocation with the chemical formula C7H7+, consisting of a phenyl group attached to a methylene group, with the positive charge delocalized over the aromatic ring and the methylene carbon. It is a relatively stable carbocation due to resonance stabilization. This ion is frequently observed in mass spectrometry of benzyl compounds.
