Tolyl ion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012102
A carbocation with the chemical formula C7H7+, derived from toluene by the formal removal of a hydride ion. This ion exists as three structural isomers: ortho-tolyl, meta-tolyl, and para-tolyl, corresponding to the position of the positive charge on the benzene ring relative to the methyl group. The tolyl ion is a distinct species from the more stable tropylium ion, which is a common fragment in the mass spectra of toluene and related compounds.
