Tropilidenes

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012321

The parent name for cyclohepta-1,3,5-triene and its derivatives formed by substitution. This non-aromatic cyclic hydrocarbon contains a seven-membered ring with three conjugated double bonds and one sp3-hybridized carbon atom. Abstraction of a hydride ion from tropilidene yields the aromatic tropylium cation (C7H7+), a stable carbocation with seven equivalent carbon atoms.
