Functional parent
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004714
A structure whose name already implies one or more characteristic groups and that carries hydrogen atoms, or groups able to undergo functional modification, such as acetic acid, benzoic acid or sulfuric acid. Derivatives such as esters, amides and anhydrides are named from it, as in methyl acetate. A hydride with a suffix, as in ethanol or cyclohexanol, is a functionalized parent hydride, not a functional parent.
