Carbonitriles
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001649
A suffix used in systematic nomenclature to name compounds RC≡N in which the carbon atom of the cyano group is not counted as part of the parent structure, as in cyclohexanecarbonitrile. By contrast, the suffix -nitrile includes the cyano carbon in the parent chain, as in pentanenitrile. Carbonitrile is a naming device rather than a class name for nitriles.
