Replacement operation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010194
A conceptual operation in chemical nomenclature where an atom or group in a parent structure is formally replaced by another, creating a new name for the modified structure. This is most prominently used in 'a' nomenclature, where a skeletal atom of a parent hydride is substituted by a heteroatom. For instance, replacing a CH2 group in cyclohexane with an oxygen atom using the prefix 'oxa' generates the name oxacyclohexane, which is the systematic name for tetrahydropyran.
