Systematic name
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011779
A name for a chemical compound built by applying a formal nomenclature system, so that its parts, assembled from prescribed stems, prefixes, suffixes and locants, specify the structure unambiguously. The rules are maintained by IUPAC. The systematic name of acetone, for example, is propan-2-one, which shows a three-carbon chain with a ketone group on carbon 2.
