Principal group

The functional group chosen as the basis for naming an organic compound according to IUPAC nomenclature rules. This group determines the suffix of the systematic name and takes precedence over other functional groups present in the molecule. For example, in an amino acid, the carboxylic acid group is typically the principal group.
