Seniority

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010741

A principle in chemical nomenclature that establishes a hierarchical order among functional groups or parent structures. This order determines which part of a molecule is designated as the principal functional group or parent chain for naming purposes. The IUPAC Blue Book provides detailed rules for assigning seniority in complex organic compounds.
