Parent ion

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008466

An electrically charged species that dissociates to give fragments, at least one of which is charged and at least one neutral. It may be a molecular ion or a charged fragment of a molecular ion, so the term is wider than molecular ion. Current IUPAC mass spectrometry recommendations favour the term precursor ion for the ion selected in tandem mass spectrometry.
