Daughter ion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002872
An ion produced by a reaction of a particular parent, or precursor, ion in a mass spectrometer, most often by fragmentation but also by processes such as a change in charge state. Every fragment ion is a daughter ion, but not every daughter ion is a fragment ion. IUPAC mass spectrometry recommendations now prefer the term product ion and discourage daughter ion.
