Davydov splitting

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002873

The splitting of an absorption or emission band into multiple components in the solid state, observed when identical chromophores are present in a crystal unit cell. This phenomenon arises from the exciton coupling between translationally inequivalent molecules within the unit cell. The magnitude of the splitting depends on the strength of the intermolecular interactions and the orientation of the transition dipoles.
