Crystal field splitting
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002752
The energy difference between the d-orbitals of a central metal ion in a coordination complex, which arises from the electrostatic interaction with surrounding ligands. This splitting removes the degeneracy of the d-orbitals, leading to distinct energy levels. The magnitude of this splitting is influenced by the nature of the metal ion, its oxidation state, and the type and geometry of the ligands.
