Ligand field
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006569
The effect of the surrounding ligands on the energies of a central metal ion's d orbitals, treating covalent as well as electrostatic metal-ligand interaction, and the basis of ligand field theory, the refinement of crystal field theory. The ligand arrangement splits the d orbitals into sets, for example t2g and eg in an octahedral complex, and the splitting sets the spin state, colour and magnetism of the complex.
