Crystal field
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002751
The electrostatic field created by the surrounding ligands or ions that influences the d-orbitals of a central metal ion in a coordination complex. This field causes the degeneracy of the d-orbitals to be lifted, resulting in different energy levels. The strength and geometry of this field determine the electronic properties and spectroscopic behavior of the complex.
