Low-spin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006796
Describing a coordination complex in which the electrons in the d-orbitals of the central metal ion are paired up in the lower energy orbitals to the maximum extent possible. This occurs when the ligand field splitting energy is large enough to overcome the electron-electron repulsion. Low-spin complexes have fewer unpaired electrons than high-spin complexes.
