Low-spin state
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006797
A configuration of electrons in a transition metal complex where the electrons occupy the lowest energy orbitals first, pairing up before occupying higher energy orbitals. This arrangement results in the minimum number of unpaired electrons and a smaller total spin angular momentum. It occurs when the ligand field splitting energy is large, overcoming electron-electron repulsion.
