Aufbau principle
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000943
A rule that dictates the filling of atomic orbitals with electrons in an atom or ion. It states that electrons occupy the lowest energy orbitals available before filling higher energy orbitals. This principle, along with the Pauli exclusion principle and Hund's rule, determines the electron configuration of an atom.
