Lewis octet rule
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006551
A chemical principle stating that atoms tend to gain, lose, or share electrons until they are surrounded by eight valence electrons. This configuration typically corresponds to a stable electron arrangement, similar to that of noble gases. Hydrogen and helium are exceptions, satisfying a duet rule with two valence electrons.
