Eighteen-electron rule

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003611

A guideline used to predict the stability of transition metal complexes, stating that complexes with 18 valence electrons in their outermost shell tend to be stable. This rule is analogous to the Lewis octet rule for main group elements, where 8 valence electrons confer stability. Complexes adhering to this rule often exhibit diamagnetic properties.
