Stevenson’s rule
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011407
A principle in mass spectrometry stating that the charge in a dissociative ionization process tends to reside on the fragment with the lower ionization energy. This rule provides a qualitative prediction for the fragmentation patterns observed in electron ionization mass spectra. It is applied to understand the relative abundance of product ions.
