Bragg’s rule

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001466

An empirical additivity rule stating that the energy loss of fast ions in a compound, expressed as a stopping cross section, is well approximated by the sum of the contributions of its constituent atoms, weighted by their abundance. The rule fills in when measured stopping data for a compound are missing, notably in Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. It neglects chemical bonding, so measured values for some compounds deviate from the sum.
