Electronic stopping cross section

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003757

The energy lost per unit path length by an ion or other charged particle in a material, divided by the atomic density of that material, counting only the loss caused by energy transfer to the electrons of the target atoms. It is quoted in units of energy times area, such as eV cm2 per atom, and it dominates the energy loss of MeV light ions in Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. The corresponding quantity for energy transfer to target nuclei is the nuclear stopping cross section.
