Stopping power
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011449
The mean energy lost per unit path length by a charged particle moving through a material, S = -dE/dx. Energy is lost mainly to the electrons of the medium (electronic stopping) and, at low particle energies, to recoiling target nuclei in elastic collisions (nuclear stopping). Common units are MeV/cm or keV/µm, and dividing by the atomic number density gives the stopping cross section.
