Linear energy transfer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006620

The mean energy that a charged particle deposits in the medium close to its track, per unit length of path traveled. It describes how densely radiation deposits energy along its path, and it is usually quoted in keV/µm. Heavy charged particles such as alpha particles have much higher values than electrons, and these high-LET radiations cause more biological damage per unit of absorbed dose.
